Who we are

Hindu Samaj Northstowe (HSN) is a local community group and registered charity that has been active in Northstowe for around four years. We began as a small group of residents coming together to create a welcoming space for connection, culture, learning and service. Over time, we have grown into a well-organised volunteer team delivering regular activities and community events.

Through our programmes and outreach, we work with local families, schools, community venues and partner groups. We run youth and family sessions, cultural celebrations, wellbeing-focused activities, volunteering and community support, with an inclusive approach that welcomes people of all backgrounds.

Our Work Spans Four Key Areas

The Shared Community Hub (Facilities & Flexible Spaces)

A welcoming, all-weather community hub designed for everyday use with flexible rooms that can host classes, workshops, support groups, meetings and celebrations. The space is planned to be accessible and multi-use, so it can adapt to changing community needs, reduce pressure on limited local venues, and provide a consistent place where people can connect and participate.

Wellbeing & Belonging

We already deliver a range of welcoming events and activities that support local wellbeing, connection and belonging. From wellbeing circles and calm social meet-ups to light movement sessions and practical community support, these sessions are designed for all ages helping residents build relationships and feel part of a stronger community.

Youth & Learning

We run positive, confidence-building events and activities for children and young people that help them learn, grow and thrive. This includes hands-on STEM and creative workshops, skills sessions, and our Dharma for Kids club is a values-based space where children explore kindness, respect, self-discipline, gratitude and community spirit. It is welcoming and child-friendly, focused on character, culture and wellbeing, families of all backgrounds are welcome to take part in all our activities.

Faith, Culture & Community Life

We bring people together through shared cultural and spiritual life, with regular gatherings, learning and celebration that welcome residents of all faiths and none. This includes our pop-up mandir sessions, family cultural learning activities, and inclusive festivals and events that encourage understanding, friendship and local pride. Everything is delivered with respectful shared guidelines, so wider participation feels comfortable whether someone comes to worship, to learn, to volunteer, or simply to enjoy community life.

Faith & Community Land Proposal - Northstowe Phase 1

Why we are making this proposal

Northstowe is growing quickly, and residents need more than a standard community centre offer. Our surveys show a clear need for an all-weather space built around three core priorities: interfaith connection, wellbeing support and culture. Families and young people have repeatedly highlighted the need for a safe, welcoming base for youth activities, learning, mentoring and positive social time, alongside spaces for support groups, workshops, arts and community volunteering.

Our approach meets these needs in a joined-up way. Northstowe currently has no Hindu place of worship, so we are proposing one that is open to all, alongside an interfaith community centre that welcomes people of any faith and people of no faith. Together, this creates one shared hub for community-led activity, from cultural celebrations and learning sessions to wellbeing programmes and interfaith gatherings, helping more people feel they belong and supporting Northstowe as it continues to grow.

Why This Matters

Northstowe is more than new homes — it’s people, families and shared experiences. As the town grows, so does the need for places that bring people together, support wellbeing and create a sense of belonging.

This project is about investing in connection, understanding and long-term community strength — creating a space that reflects the values and diversity of Northstowe.
